Miri, 19 July - The Penang karate team never fail to deliver as they clinched three gold medals and one bronze medal on the first day of the 18th Malaysia Games.

Priyashankari Hari Sankar defended her women’s kumite below 45kh title which she had won in the 17th Malaysia Games at Perlis.

The petite lass literally kicked her way through from the first round to the finals beating her opponents with ease.

The following two gold medals were delivered to Penang by individual karate kata athletes Khaw Yee Voon and Ivan Oh Theng Wei.

Yee Voon met crowd favourite, from host state Sarawak, Nadzirah Tuwah for the gold medal bout. But she proved to be the best of the best when all four juries raised their flag.

Ivan bagged the gold by defeating Terengganu exponent Ernie Tye with his impressive kata skills.

Both Ivan and Yee Voon also claimed a gold medal each for the last Malaysia Games in Perlis in the men’s and women’s team kata events respectively.

Wong Yie Hang defeated Sarawak Collymore Lau Li Kai to bring home a bronze medal for Penang in the Men’s Kumite below 67kg category.
